Which Mattress Protector is right for me?

Babies. How can something so cute be so messy? As the mother of four lovely cherubs, I ask myself this question every day.

After bringing home cherub number one, I was astounded at the spillage of bodily fluids. The spills would come from both ends, she had no particular preference as long as long as it was messy. I had to find a solution fast, and so my custom mattress protectors were born.

There are several types of mattress protector available in the Sarah Anne and Little Lion Range:

Basic Mattress Protector

The basic mattress protector consists of a single layer polyurethane laminated (PUL) polyester knit. It provides waterproof protection from all those spills and can be used inside out in order to have a wipe down layer. The basic mattress protectors can be cold machine washed on normal cycle and line dried.

Quilted mattress protector

The quilted mattress protector has a layer of PUL fabric with a padded quilted top. You get waterproof protection with the extra padding giving more comfort and an extra layer between waterproof layer and baby. This is an excellent option for warmer climates – think of it like sitting on a leather seat in summer – it’s much more pleasant if there is a blanket between you and the seat! The quilted mattress protector can also be cold machine washed on normal cycle and line dried.

Quilted 50% wool filled mattress protector

The 50% wool quilted mattress protector has a layer of PUL fabric with a 50% wool padded quilted top and cotton cover. You get waterproof protection with the extra padding giving more comfort and an extra layer between waterproof layer and baby. You also get the luxury of baby sleeping on wool which can help regulate temperature. This is also an excellent option for warmer climates. The 50% wool quilted mattress protector can be cold machine washed on wool cycle or hand washed and line dried. You must use Wool Mix or another wool friendly detergent.

Wool fleece waterproof mattress protector

The wool fleece waterproof mattress protector has a layer of PUL fabric with a wool fleece top. You get waterproof protection with the extra padding giving more comfort and an extra layer between waterproof layer and baby. You get the luxury of baby sleeping on wool which can help regulate temperature. This is also an excellent option for cooler climates, but can also be used with a sheet in warmer climates. When sleeping on wool, SIDS suggests ensuring baby doesn’t get too hot during warm weather. The wool fleece mattress protector can be cold machine washed on wool cycle or hand washed and line dried. You must use Wool Mix or another wool friendly detergent. The wool fleece will shrink if not laundered correctly, just like a woollen jumper.

So which one to choose? My favourite is the woollen protectors on which my babies slept well. The quilted protectors are great for comfort and protection, or you may like the basic protector to use with a fluffy sheet. I have the range, the choice is yours.
